PILATES

Pilates Method is a fitness system, which is distilled from the study of yoga, dance, martial arts & rehabilitation techniques. The basics were developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates, who called his method Contrology because he believed that the mind can be used to control the muscles.

Pilates is a safe and sensible exercise system, focused on improving flexibility, strength and balance. The central element of Pilates is to create a fusion of the mind and the body, making the most of its strengths, counteracting its weaknesses, and correcting its imbalances. With the goal of producing a union of mind and body, the method requires that one constantly pays attention to one's body while doing the movements. Instead of doing many repetitions of each exercise, Pilates preferred fewer, more precise and effective movements, which are low impact and easy to perform using floor mats, fit balls, and resistance bands. Strength and flexibility, particularly of the abdomen and back muscles, coordination-both muscular and mental, are key components of our effective Pilates program.

With systematic practice of specific exercises coupled with focused breathing patterns, Pilates has proven itself invaluable as a fitness endeavor. Widely embraced by dancers for years, Pilates is gaining increasing popularity among people of all ages and fitness levels across the country.

With regular attendance, Pilates trainees can expect to lose weight and tone muscle mass. Those engaged in our Pilates program also gain increased lung capacity, improved posture, balance, joint health, and core strength. Pilates method leads to a decreased impact of stress on the body and provides a foundation for a positive body awareness. Pilates teaches balance and control of the body, and that capability converts to amplified control over other areas of one's life.
